Home to roughly 275 modernist houses, Carderock Springs was developed in the early ‘60s in a wooded enclave just outside of DC. The distinctive mid-century homes were designed to be enfolded by the natural surroundings, and the neighborhood has appeared on the National Register of Historic Places. The homeowners love their home, and approached us to help them expand it to accommodate their growing family.

Staying below the tree line, we opted to extend out from both ends of the existing house to include a master suite, a kitchen, a piano room, and expanded living space. Light floods through skylights and large glass panels that serve as transparent separations between the kitchen and the wooded lot to the rear of the property. Clean modern lines amplify the open space, and high-end fixtures encourage a feeling of ease and peace.

The butterfly roof over the kitchen and living areas shelter soaring ceilings that further welcome the outside world into this six-bedroom, four-bathroom sanctuary. Furthermore, the massing, materials, and detailing of the exterior all complement the existing architecture so that the project is a seamless achievement in subtlety.
