Luxury and light are for all practical purposes synonymous when evoked in the architectural world. The two certainly propelled our drive to transform this rundown, narrow DC rowhouse with interior renovation, upward expansion, and a rear addition. What emerged is a pair of expansive two-story condominiums, each comprising three bedrooms and two and a half baths and offering exquisite and luxuriant respite from a demanding urban world.
We pulled down the interior walls to let light flood through the main living spaces from end to end. Soaring ceilings and integrated lighting coupled with vast expanses of glass amplify the spaciousness, while a collection of surprising angles and familiar finishes provide texture and interest.
Beautiful oak flooring runs throughout the homes, and is set off by an elegant palette of grays and whites – accented by black steel banister work on the open stairs that lead up through and behind the two homes.
Each large kitchen provides high-end appliances and a well-appointed workspace fit for any chef – budding or professional. Marble surfaces and black accents infuse the spaces with modernity, and cozy banquettes add comfort. A long formal dining space and a more intimate breakfast area provide plenty of hosting capacity, whether for the night or a long weekend.
An owner’s suite, two bedrooms, and a second full bath complete each unit, and inhabitants enjoy outdoor spaces with large glass doors in the rear of the structure opening to patios and decks. The upper unit residents also have the added pleasure of a private roof-top deck, which creates a third-floor living area and provides 360° views of this exciting neighborhood, as well as further out over the city.
