We were tasked with casting a new light on an aging colonial brick house, while providing more living space for a growing family. Aiming to maintain the integrity of the original building, we opted to expand the space through a harmonious, complementary addition, and refresh its initial interior structure with a complete renovation. The result is a light-filled, colorful, modern – yet traditionally rooted – home in the Friendship Heights neighborhood that comfortably houses a family of four.
Built onto the rear of the structure away from the view of the street, the new construction provides a master suite, kitchen, and family room. The first floor also provides space for a home office, tucked away from the daily bustle of the family areas. On the second floor, the master suite includes a modern streamlined bathroom, and looks out on the spacious enclosed garden that can further be enjoyed from the adjoining balcony.
A refinished-oak staircase extends down into a family room that opens to an airy kitchen and dining area. Soaring ceilings and large windows provide these common spaces with an abundance of natural light, which is further amplified by a glass double door that opens to the garden, blurring the line between the indoor and outdoor environments.
